Hi gang on the new forum.....
Picked up an elan last winter with a 250 single in it and was a hoot to drive compared to my alpines. Ran flawlessly, but is in dire need of a new tub.
Anyways this winter started up and would run fine for a minute and then bog. New fuel, lines and a carb rebuild and same issue. Couple days later it started to backfire now too. Thoughts on what to look for? Tried different coil, wire and new plug.
Will emery the points tomorrow and see if they are a tad dirty, otherwise will bring it home and open up the magneto bits for a better inspection.

Hey Krusty, welcome back! I wonder if the advance lever is sticking? You should be able to see that once you pop the flywheel Ha! Electric start is never a bad thing..

checked the advance and it was moving freely. cleaned up the points with an emery board. started up as usual in half a pull and after 15 seconds let out a big fart through the carb and died. would not start again. something electrical is not happy. need to order a flywheel puller to see what is really going on.
started up my other 250 just with a quick shot of ether and no issues with it. need to transplant asap as it is supposed to snow later this week. last winter cutting firewood the snow was up to my crotch and a real pain to work in, so far this year we have the bare minimum to ride on.

When you said in your first post you changed your coil so I'm assuming you have an external coil.

What year is it and it is a manual start correct on this one. Make sure wires coming out of mag area are good and check on the ground wire on the coil them are the simple things to check first.

I put another rebuilt carb on the spare engine with the starter so I will do a transplant and then figure out what is wrong with the original. Will get me riding again. Well instead of the nordic or alpine. The electric start one I had going today on the ground and it seemed to have no issues. None obvious anyways. As for your question on the wiring, lets just say that the wiring is "sufficient" to get by for now There was another 71 nordic forsale that looked nice with a 399e and the ciggy lighter but was a bit too far for me to get. I hate road trips in the winter. Looked like in very nice shape. Should be able to get some video this weekend riding with some fresh powder if I remember to charge up the gopro. There is only about 8 - 10" right now in the woods. A good base, but not that 2' of powder we typically get.

Well, did Krusty ever get his backfiring Elan running? Did he go up in a ball of flame when the machine shot a flame out the Tillotson, igniting his grease and gas soaked coveralls? (cue ominous music...)
WE MAY NEVER KNOW!!!

Possibly recovering from a nasty infection he got there? I did however get to meet and shake the hand of the bands founder, bass player and primary song writer when they came through town as British Lion a couple weeks back-

Sweet Eric! I'm not too familiar with British Lion but I'll check them out. I saw Maiden back in Cleveland, Ohio back in March 1987. A band named Waysted opened for them. Ahh to be young again. Wish I had all the money I spent on concerts and concert shirts back in the 80s. Although a couple years ago I did sell an original Metallica concert tee for $575.00 on Ebay. Bought a couple sleds with the bounty!
Now back to your regularly schedule snowmobile thread. Sorry for the minor hijack, LOL
