Ok guys anyone have any detailed pics of cutting and replacing the tank on a bubble nose. Thinking of using an oly tank out of a 71 or 72. Can this be done or is an elan tank the only way?

The Elan tank does fit the best mainly because it's lower in the belly than the oly tank. That makes it much handier trying to re-mount the handle bars. I did two sleds now, and like the 2nd the best. Actually bought a new Elan tank from Royal distributing for about 115$ or so a few years back now. Welded up a new support off of some new angle iron on the edge of the tank hole. Used 1" square tube (its what I had) and welded on a bushing thing from an old donor (you can use the one from the tube you cut out). It takes a bit of fooling around to get the right angles, but can be done. I was also able to rig up a filler tube to allow filling in the normal hood hole. That by far took me the most time. Used a few steel tubes cut up, a plastic pic elbow, and a random rubber rad hose I got from parts source. Just looked for one with a good bend in it.
First sled I didnt bother with all that tube stuff and just made the hood removable. Done.
I'll post some pics in a bit.

Started cutting into the tank, and it was a disaster inside. Full of some kind of smelly liquid from the 70's or early 80's... So I opened up the hole nearly the entire way around the tank size, and bent the back lip up a little just in case. Made up this rig and placed it / trimmed until I liked it used an old tank for fitment. Welded on a socket for the steering shaft to sit into Added in the new tank, and put a little bit of thin stickyback foam to protect the tank and snug fit it. Put an inline filter in because I can, but tried to hide it somewhat. drilled a hole through the square tube and put a bolt through to hold the new steering support strap (from a ~68 or so), and also a re-bent hold down strap for the gas tank. That's some thick shrink tube on it to be a little gentler on the new tank. Also made up a little metal hanger bracket thing to try and support the tube from ever sagging and causing problems. Drilled the hood hole a wee bit bigger (2" I think) and put the rubber grommet in from a 69/70. Oh the gas cap on the tank is a bombardier one that I drilled a 2" hole in the top and forced a metal tube through. It takes patience getting that stuff lined up and figured out but worth the effort in my opinion. The only pain in the a$$ problem I have now is the steering shaft is just a weeeeeee bit higher than it used to be at the bottom which isn't noticeable in all but one issue - the popup headlight touches it. So it won't release by pulling on the cable. It goes by with some force, but that wont last. I have to do some figuring there. Might just leave the light up forever if I have to. To answer the OLy tank question - it will fit into that location but you can see how the steering wont work with it. You would have to modify it quite a bit to get around that thick of a tank.

Thanks for the info and pics. I'm hoping the 70 only im getting won't have tank issues. Never hurts to hope.

Olyman, I'm assuming that's a 66 you're showing in those pictures? Nice work! What type clutch is on there. Doesn't look like the 3-pin like on my 67. The Hermit (who used to hang out around here) always promoted adding some (like 3?) large washers under the secondary spring to help the performance. I think he said it really helped on the downshift. Have you tried this? Sorry to hijack the thread, if I should start a new thread, please let me know.

Yessir thats a 66. Thanks for the compliments lads. Ya that's the original secondary clutch for a 66. Made those 6-pin secondary's from 60 to 66 (just the case changed). But 67 was kind of a one year thing with the 3 pins. That's a pretty good idea with the washers. To be honest I still havent driven this 66 so I dont know how it even works yet. Been too swamped trying to get the tnt done. Feel free to make up a pin clutch thread. Probably some good ideas floating around for it.

IF YA DON'T WANT TO FAB UP A NEW STEERING LOOP BY THE TANK FIND A 71-73 15 INCH CHASSIE AND CUT OUT THAT LOOP AND REWELD IT ON YOUR CHASSIE
