Hi, looking for throttle and brake cables for 1963 ski doo R8- does anyone have some suggestions where I might find these or what other type of (bike?) cable that would be suitable? Also, looking for the brake assembly that goes onto the driven clutch as well as brake light assembly and lens. Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

Welcome to the board. Thats a cool sled you have there. I have an R6. Many people just go to walmart and pickup a bicycle cable of sorts. A front brake would do the job. But its up to you how original you want it to look. OEM style had a secondary wire that tightly wrapped around the cable that went through the thumb flipper. That made the cable a little thicker for wear on the contact point + it made it so a single cable with no other end on it could be turned into a loop. Other options: This is how mine came to me - I just kept it this way for convenience Ive also seen people just poke the cable end through the oem hole (where my rivet is in the picture). I ended up doing that for the brake on it; Up to you how original you want it be.

Thanks for the info OlyMan. any idea where i might find the brake mechanism that goes on the driven clutch? there is no brake left on mine. Also, any thoughts on how to deal with spidercracks in gel coat on fiberglass hood? thanks

Finding an actual brake lever is a little hard but not impossible. Vintage swap meets are a possible source if you don't have any luck online. Be weary of online, unless someone speaks up on this board. Another option is to just make one. If you need I will take measurements and get you some pics of mine. Just let know.
The good thing is IF you chose not to have brakes ... I don't think you'll even notice lol. However it is nice to hold ot still while you load it onto a tilt trailer.

Ebay is super expensive but there is some good stuff on there. I have bought a pile of stuff online and have never been ripped off.
About the spider cracks. You need to "v" them out with a dremel. Some guys then use fiberglas resin or the automotive filler putty but that stuff shrinks. It's pretty hard to get rid of them completely, you need to really take your time if you want a pro job. Yellow paint seems to show the imperfections.

Thanks for the informations guys. Olyman, yes if you have some pics or measurements on the brake mechanism that would be great. As you say dont think a brake is a must on this machine and is likley why it was removed or not repaired many years ago. thanks

No problem will do. Yep for sure. I put a cable on mine so it wouldn't rattle around.
