I know over the last few years I have made a fair few posts as to what I thought the differences were in the 292 engine. As some of you may recall a few months back I made a correction to what I had posted many times. Due to the recent grenading of a 292 engine which I have taken apart, now I have a sample of all the 292 jugs I have. Here is a few pics & thoughts about them.
Top of `71/72 crank case, note the transfer area more toward the exhaust side. ( note did not take pic of `70 case ). The `70 case has the transfers about centered from intake to exhaust.
**NEED PICTURES HERE**
3 different cylinders. On left is `72, middle is `71, right is `70. Note on left one the transfer area is more toward the exhaust ( kinda` matches the 72 case ).
Middle one is interesting, the transfer area is more positioned like a `70 jug but the material around the transfer is very thick, thus this jug base will fit and seal on any of the `70 to `72 crank cases.
**NEED PICTURES HERE**
Pics of exhaust port, again left `72, mid `71, right 70
72 & 71 same, 70 diff.
**NEED NEW PICS HERE**
Intake ports, `72 on left, 71 - mid, `70 right.
`70 & 71 are same, `72 is diff.
**NEED NEW PICS HERE**
`71/72 piston on left, `70 piston on right
**NEED NEW PICS HERE**
`71/72 head on left, `70 head on right.
The `70 head has a smaller volume, it is visable that the built up part travels more toward the plug hole side on the `70 but it is also thicker ( closer to piston ).
With out having the sleeves out of the jug it is about impossible to tell but it actually looks like all the sleeves are actually same regardless of year.
I have made all references to a `70 part, in fact those parts are also exact same as the `69 SS parts.

Very interesting and useful information. Thanks Bones!

Thanks Bones! this is super information all in one spot with images to help.
My favorite 292 concoction to build is a 3/4" crank and case (easiest to find, but has to have big ports) '71 jug (biggest intake and exhaust) and a '70 head (highest compression) and a HD 83/98 (again easiest to find) and a way you go....
This combo is hard to beat.

Bones i have a question. i have a 70 292 blizzard engine that the guy before me bored it out for a .040 over piston. (oly piston) the piston i have has both ring positioning pins on the intake side of the piston where as the tnt/blizzard pistons have one dead center on the intake and one inbetween the exhaust and transfer ports. Do all oly pistions have the positioning pins, one dead center and the other between the intake port and the transfer port? I hope that wasn't too confusing its hard to describe if you don't understand i will take some pictures. I have some concerns about where the ring gap will end up on the lower ring. Porting is the same on the 70 blizzard and the 292 tnts correct?
skidog59
also is the sleeve from a '70 292 blizzard the same as one from a 292 tnt. I have an extra 292 cylinder if i could take this sleeve out and put a standard bore one in it that would be great.

Hi skidog59. Sorry didn`t see the post from Oct-4 til now.
Yes I am sure all Oly pistons have both ring locating pins on the intake side and the TnT / Blizzard pistons have them one on each side.
You indicate a Oly piston in a Blizz engine.....Maybe you have done some head/jug shaving The Oly piston has a lower dome than the Blizzard piston so with a stock head your compression will be down some what.
FYI; Find a `70 - 640 Wiseco piston at std, it is perfect for the 292 at 40 over The 640 Blizz piston has the correct crown for the 292 Blizz. The 640 piston has centered transfer windows but they are so wide they will open up the 292 ports just fine
As to sleeves, sorry can`t answer that.
FYI; The 320 Oly sleeve is the same OD as the 292 TnT sleeve, so maybe you could doo some thing with one of them if the port height is within range ?? I know a 320 sleeve will not work to make a 292 TnT sleeve as ports are too far out of range.

I did a little investigating of my own on 300 pistons and it looks like the old 300 sport kit pistions have the one locating pin on in between the exhaust and transfer port. I'm not too worried about the compression, as this isn't for racing its just so it runs and drives. I'm planning on trail riding this sled so maybe the lower compression will keep me safe. Although with those huge fins it seems they run incredibly cool. i'll have to keep an eye out for a 640 blizzard piston.

picked up a 640 blizzard piston off of ebay hopefully it shows up in time for this weekend

So I took my 70 292 engine apart just to check it out / clean it up and I found that its definitely 71 engine - thanks for the awesome info above Bones! Inside I found it has a Wiseco piston which is in nice shape. Has one L ring on top, and one normal one underneath and looks like a 70 ELKO style. The numbers on the bottom side of the piston say R320 R640, and it measures about 75.8mm. Is that a generic size for a 292, or was this bored out a little?
skidog59
That has been bored out. Tars probably a 300 piston

So thanks to all the awesome info posted above, I have determined my swap meet 292 is a 70 with a 71 piston.
The head does not look right, it's slightly offset like a 335. Part number is 813 030.
Since the 292 heads are pretty tough to find, what can I substitute? Not really concerned with maximum output at this moment. Just something that doesn't hang over the side of the jug and look stupid.
Thanks.
