I have a couple tachs here that take an electrical connection. Any tips on how to test them?

Do you have a running engine you could mock wiring up from? Doesn't have to be permanent

Well there are two main types - the really early 1969/70 westach style which operates on the mag wire and powers an internal relay every stroke of the engine. Then there's the 71 and newer style that works on electrical pulses coming from your lighting coil (A/C sinewave). I assume you have the newer style which you will be able to see if it moves - but not how accurately. I'm guessing you don't have a sinewave generator sitting on the bench, but you can test to see if the needle jumps with a 9v battery. You should be able to tell which wires are for the light bulb so don't bother with that. There should be two other wires for the tach. just touch quickly on those two and you should see the needle move a little. The gauge is AC but your battery is DC so it will only move a little in one direction. Again its crude but will at least let you know that things are connected internally.
BTW - if its the old westach style - DONT ever connect the lighting coil wire to it... she wont appreciate it!
