Some folks use 80W-90 gear oil. Some use transmission fluid. I'm going to try transmission oil in my 70 TNT once I refill it in the near future. I always used the Ski Doo chain case oil but this time I'm going to go a different route. These old low HP sleds don't need the expensive synthetic chain case oils that are recommended for the new sleds of today. That's my take on the subject. There are many opinions on the topics of chaincase and premix oils, LOL.

I haven't tried tranny fluid yet. So far I just use just plain old stinky 80w90.

Thanks guys I have always used 80W90 for years. Reason I asked I was sitting at a dog food plant waiting to get unloaded with my wheat and two guys were going at it about oils somehow I got roped into the fire and I don't really know how the chaincase topic got started but they couldn't believe that I used 80W90. One guy was a poolarise man so what does his opinion mean LOL but I said yes I use the ski dooo oil in my newer sleds but the older ones 80W90 it went back in forth for awhile learned a lot what guys use amazing. Nothing biggy just curious.

For your consideration, here’s a quote from page 10 of the 1977 John Deere Cyclone and Liquifire Service Manual, SM2108:
“Oil used in the chain case should be a good grade SAE90”
Included the source as this topic seems to be one those things that gets everyone lit up.
I use 85-90w in my lathe. Seeing as how there’s a bunch around the workshop, it also goes into the vintage chaincases. Leaks out as well as anything else…….
