The first snow of the season is falling here in eastern Massachusetts, it's happening right now after dark. And what a beautiful snow it is. I call this "Charlie Brown" snow. You know, from the Christmas special sponsored by Dolly Madison. Dense, giant, round, fluffy flakes drifting lazily from the sky. Each one meandering on its own way earthward. It was in the forecast but who knew it would take this special shape? Another year past with a rainy spring, a hot and humid summer, an awesome extended foliage season, and covid. And finally this. It's simply glorious
And so tonight I got to dress in my winter jacket and stand still under the backyard flood lights and let the white delight drape over me for half an hour. There were no thoughts of sleds or snow blowers. Just a breath taking embrace for this special moment. "I get to be here again." That's pretty much my prespective on everything at this age. Traditions sweeten as the years pass.
There's many places on the planet where this never ever happens. We are very fortunate to be inhabitants of the north American snow belt. The magic of winter has filled my heart since I was a child. That is a constant that will never change.
Best to all. Joe Olympique

Joeoly,
You did a wonderful job of painting the picture for us. So glad you shared that. Did you happen to eat any of the November snow? It taste better in January ya know!
"The magic of winter has filled my heart since I was a child. That is a constant that will never change"
You took the words right out of my mouth. Sadly, most everyone close to me, family, friends, co-workers; really don't like snow and cold. I'm a loner in this snow-belt world that I truly love. Always have and (hopefully) always will. When I was about 12, I kept a weather log. I would listen to the 1970's Radio Shack Realistic weather alert radio and write down the daily details. Snow predicted and actual snow fall. Temps also. Funny, I still have that very same radio out in the garage and I occasionally plug er in and give it the old nostalgic listen. I used to have the entire loop speech memorized.
It went something like "This is NOAA weather radio broadcasting on a frequency of 162.4 megahertz from the National Weather Service office at the Erie International Airport in Erie Pennsylvania. Current conditions, .....".
I was a freak then, and I guess I still am
Oh, and I still watch the Charlie Brown Christmas! Wouldn't miss it if I had a choice.
Thanks again for sharing that experience,

You're very welcome. It's a special and unique moment every year. Like an old friend coming to call after a long absence. Always more thrilling when it arrives after dark, the cones of flakes lit underneath the street lights. The backyard floods shining the way.
Last year, with time off due to covid, I got some projects done around my house. One job was to improve the outdoor lighting around the place. It's awesome. My yard now lights up like Fenway Park at night.
I've had several very bizarre and inexplicable out of body experiences in my life (no drugs involved). I was a spectator. The first occurred when I was a teenager. I was sitting on top of the rail fence on a snowbound evening. Just getting covered with the heavy fall because that's we like to doo. There was a streetlight very near by. It was the old style... narrow half moon shade with a yellow lamp.
The cone of light was flush with flakes. The night was silent and muted, there were no cars or any sounds except that of the wind and the falling snow. I had the world to myself. And then it happened. Charlie Brown and Linus strolled, arm and arm, underneath that streetlight. They were in full three dimensional human form and in color. He was sucking his thumb, his blanket was draped over his shoulder. Charlie Brown was leading the way. They disappeared into the darkness almost as quickly as they arrived. Shivers ran down my spine "What the hell did I just see?"
That freakish moment left an indelible burn. Every year, to this day, when the white comes at night I can still those two kids walking through the snow.
