I don't know about anyone else, but I've had a couple broken spindles because of them.
Oldsledz
I don't like the looks of them so I take them off any sleds I get with them.
Invader70 what sleds did they brake on?
INVADER70
Twice on 2 separate '72 Oly's...I think I still have one of the broken spindles on the shelf somewhere.
I've also broken springs because the ski sticks out further than the body of the sled so sometimes when you hit a stump or what not the ski will bend back further than it should because the body of the sled is not there to stop it.
Just my 2 cents anyway, I know alot of people like them because they doo make the sled more stable.
bigten1965
where dose it brake on the spindle?
glfritz
when i was young dad put them on my 72 oly and elan and they both broke spindles right where the spindle is attacked to the ski saddle. and they look funny.

I like to ride the old machines with a narrower ski stance, I think it is more fun to ride them and it takes more skill, more "english" is required to turn.
I have a long track Skandic that I put spreaders on. I think the long tracks REALLY handle squirrelly. After putting the spreaders on the tippiness did not improve any, but the lowering of the skiis did help turning in low snow conditions, which before was near impossible. All the weight was on the track.
Ski-doos seem to be designed with not enough weight on the skiis, IMHO.

is there anything else anyone dose to make these old sleds less tippy or will i just have to become a better driver
thanks Erich

For me, being tippy is what makes these old girls so much fun to 'tame' lol. Just as jerryswiss says - the more "english" required - the more challenging it is. Besides, if I wasn't up to a challenge, I wouldn't be running these old machines!
I like to try and ride in places that the newer machines can't go. Funny thing last year, I was running my old 68 oly in & out of the really deep & steep ditches around my place. It went in some places that even I was a little worried I would never see the light of day until spring... but she kept pushing the fluffy snow out of the way and kept going. So, now that there is a doo trail there, a bunch of other new sleds tried running my same path... What a mess. I ended up helping those guys for about an hour trying to get 2 machines out of the deep snow. I'm not trashing new sleds at all, but there is nothing like these vintage machines when it comes to some challenging riding!
Again, this is also my humble opinion.
Cheers

You said a mouthfull Joe ! It's all in the physics, the downward load is not directly opposed but instead faces a lateral shear. It is a profoundly poor engieneering design offered up for consumption.
Imagine strapping a pair of these things to your feet and wearing your boots 6 inches off to either side. A broken ankle or fractured tibia would be just a matter of time

LOL,
I have spreaders on my 78 Everest and now I was thinking about putting them on my 80 Citation for the wife! But, I think the best thing is to take them off the Everest and buy her an Artic Cat!
Just kidding! Will just let her learn to drive or buy her a newer sled!

I had a 86 skandic lt, man that thing was terrable It was so long when it started leaning it was hard to stop it. My 96 380 skandic is way better although 8 inches wider. You talk about old sleds we have about 2 feet of powder and deeper in places and on my 69 and 70 olys you can pick your way through some unbelevable places. It a complete blast they just dont stop there tracks are like smooth sandpaper but they just keep moveing. you get stuck and you can get out no problem. last saturday i was stuck for 2.5 hours with my 08 tundra lt. it was the worst back is still sore.
