Well, received the new track last Friday, and got it all together this weekend. Axles/bogies rebuilt, haven't touched anything on the engine, other than replacing one coil. Gas tank was a four-hour exercise to clean up. Put a Go-Pro on it today to give you all a little ride.
Question: Pretty handy mechanically, but certainly not the most knowledgeable with snowmobiles. Is it typical for a new track to seem a little stiff, maybe robbing a few HP? It was wrapped up like a roll of toilet paper when I got it. Warmed/flattened over night, it seemed to tension well, and aligned well; don't know if I am just thinking about it too much.
Need a little more snow now so I can get beyond the yard.

Congatulations ! Good job! I would say yes, a new track might be a little stiff but I wouldn't worry about it all. As long as track alignment at the back and track tension at the middle set of boggies is correct I think you're good to go.

Sweet! Well done powerwagon75! The old Nordic looks awesome. The video is great too - like I was right there with you. Did you manage a brand new track? Thats un heard of for an 18".. The more you use the sled the better the track will get. Seems to work well as it is. Enjoy!

Hi, thanks joe & olyman! Yes, through some small miracle, I had re-tried my many searches for 18” tracks after giving up, and lo and behold I found an ad on kijiji in Ontario. It was a NOS aftermarket Dayton track. The original one was looking pretty rough due to age and time, and was a shame, as it wasn’t even worn, Can clearly read the Bombardier part and serial numbers, and the yellow paint dot was still visible on it. The rubber was just cracking too deep for my comfort. So, yes it is great to have a new track.
I do have another track-related question for you all though. When I rebuilt the drive train, I put the hard Kimpex sprockets on front and rear. Sometimes when the machine de-accelerates from a higher speed, I hear a random clunk-clunk sound a couple of times. Do you suppose it’s just backlash of the track, and the plastic cogs smacking the metal clamps on the track? I took it for a short ride today, and re-checked tension and alignment—tension seemed OK, made one small adjustment to alignment.
All I am missing at this point is the right-side hood vent. Still searching for that. Made two reflectors for the left side tonight (the 1 1/4” orange and red square ones) and glued them in as they had fallen out at some point. Summer plan will be to re-do the satin black paint and yellow on the skis.
Since my goal was to just have fun on it, my eventual project may be with the electrical. Looking at the drawings, it appears to be the same lighting coil that the electric start model used, but one part of the center-tapped to ground coil is not used. The line is coming out and up to the light switch though, and has power on it. Was thinking about using both lighting coil wires, and adding a floating DC ground regulator and small ballast battery. (Would have to isolate existing lamp wires off of frame ground) This way the lamps would run on regulated 13~14 volts DC, and I could possibly add an additional LED headlight, and I also wanted to put a dual-reading cylinder head temp gauge on it. That’s the plan, anyway. Will post on here, if I ever get to it, with the results.
Oh, and the reason I really wanted to do this, was that I do a fair bit of motorcycle riding from spring until its too cold, so I decided I needed a winter version of something that gives me as much fun! Ride on! 😀

Hey Powerwagon, thanks for that video, I really enjoyed it. My buddy had a 71 Nordic 399e with the matching Ski Boose MKII. Man I can't count the hours of fun we had with that outfit. Yours seems to be running well and moves you along great. Keep an eye on your Kimpex sprockets because some folks say they can wear down fairly quick, especially on an old rusty-clipped track. But yours is new so technically should not be an issue. For a number of years now I've been using the sprockets from Goose exclusively. I just think they are a little superior to the Kimpex but we shall see since I just did my Nordic sprockets last March or April. I also installed a really nice used aftermarket track (Innov brand). 3 weeks ago, I took the that Nordic for a 17 mile ride for the first time since then and it it was really super smooth as far as track noise and vibration was concerned. Better than its ever been since I've owned the sled since about 2005. I don't know exactly how tight I have the track set, but after 40 years of messing around with these beasts, for me it's all just adjusting the track tension until it "feels right". If I had any clunking type noise that concerned me, I would probably just tighten it up a little more and see if that noise goes away. Repeat as necessary with care not to overtighten and risk axle bearing damage Also, I should mention that during my ride when I was hitting speeds over 40 mph, when I was riding the ice and snow covered roads, when I hit some bumps in the road, that track did make some sounds, but not a clunking sound. More like a minor track slapping, very minor and I believe this is normal for most all sleds and acceptable performance. It's hard to describe the sound, LOL. But you know it when ya hear it.
Sorry, I'm no help with the electrical stuff.

Thank you Doo640ER! You know, I didn't even think about track slapping. I'll have to think about that on my next ride and see if I can pinpoint it. Could use a little more snow around here yet. The last stuff we got was really wet and heavy, and then cooled down the next day, so its crusty, and pretty dense to plow through. Sure is fun to ride though.

Thinking about your electrical ideas. Yes your coil will work for this, but I think you should use the two coil wires to supply the AC pins of a rectifier. The rectifier will turn those ac lines into a crude DC that you supply the battery with. No real need for a regulator because thats what the battery will do. Thats how an old estart system works. It will keep it charged up and not have enough ac to over charge it. Then you use that DC battery voltage for whatever you want, but remember that if you don't switch it with the key or a relay it will always pull from the battery. Hope that makes sense.

Hi ericr, yes we are very fortunate to live on 3.3 acres just outside of our small town. Can ride the fence line up to town, and cut across two blocks to the store as needed now, if the big winds/snows come. State trail goes by our place less than a 1/2 mile away, although I don't know if I'll buy that tab..its over $100 for three years. It'll cost me $8.50 to get a regular lifetime registration for the old antique!

I have a similar problem in NY as far as trail fees. Costs 45.00 a year to register a sled. I do it because I go through the state park to use my sled to go ice fishing I almost never go on the trail system so it seems like a big waste of money. You are lucky at least you have a vintage registration where you are
I would be interested in how you make out with the lights. Coming back from the lake in the dark after fishing can be a real adventure sometimes. LEDs would be a lot better than those oly 35w bulbs

banoe I think there is a vintage registration 1980 or older. I remember reading an article about some senator either wanted or put it through I'll have to find it.

There was a bill for vintage registration about two years ago. I think it made it through the house but died in the Senate
