I am reassembling a 299 originally equipped with electric start. The starter is long gone so the starter ring gear is now dead weight. Is there any benefit or hurt in removing the gear ring? Maybe the rotating mass change will make no difference whatsoever but am curious the thoughts or experience of others.

I have seen a couple E start machines that just had the starter hole blocked off with a plate, I don't think it needs to be done unless you want to run the non E start fan shroud in which case I don't know if there is a clearance problem with it on.

No problem at all if you take that off. Might even have a snappier throttle response... but not likely much lol. A flywheel without that ring gear on it is definitely nicer to take on & off. Totally up to you. You can make a hole cover with a piece of cardboard from a cereal box, then transfer to a thin piece of metal if you wanted to.
