Joe, my decision would be easier if I could see the beauty in its current condition. "Battle Scars" sounds intriguing, LOL. Ya got me thinking now. I have a 70 Oly Frankensled that I could do the same thing to. Just preserve what's there. Oh, and getting it running would help. But yes, pictures please if ya can.

I like having at least one of these in the herd. That's how my 66 is (for now anyhow). Just made it mechanically sound, then try to make it look as original as I could. Post a picture of it.

The correct police will have a fit over this, so go right ahead! I resemble that remark EricR! LOL ! But seriously, I've toned-down my OCD when it comes to fixing this old iron. I like YETI's idea of preserving one in it's current state. May as well prevent it from getting rustier.
Joe, does your's look worse than this one? You've got me thinking I should doo the same with this Frankensled. If anything it would be good for a laugh. I've never tried to start this thing in the nearly 12 years I've owned it, but I have a couple one-lungers under the bench I could try since I know they have spark. Here's a really old picture from when I first brought it home in January of 2009. Paid a whopping $50 for it. The gas tank would be the problem, maybe I could mount one under the seat in that riser box?? Hmmm, not a bad idea if I could find something to fit. Guess I could make one?

I think it's a great idea! I did that very thing to a 1970 Oly this spring. Dismantled it to a bare tunnel, used a rust converter that turned the rusty spots a black colour, then sprayed the whole thing with clear coat to preserve that 50 year old patina, battle scars and all. Reassembled it all with new bearings, sprockets etc. It's now waiting for a carb kit and snow to see how she goes. I'll share a few pics when I figure out how.

The correct police will have a fit over this, so go right ahead! I can tell you that restoring to showroom is a process that some of us need to go through on our way to patina.

It has to be a good feeling to finally finish one. I don't think I'll ever quite get there, but I'm ok with that. The thrill of the ride is what got us all here, and a desire to keep these old machines going drives us. And as parts and machines become harder to get, dooing a "complete" restoration gets harder and more expensive.
As for leaving the battle scars, I say go for it. You gotta show us a pic of this thing!!!!

Here's the way I look at it.. Would you rather have prom queen that won't even hold your hand, or her slightly chubby step sister with a lazy eye that is lets say "A lot of fun"
