I have a 68 Oly 299. A friend has offered me a 71 Oly chain case/secondary to "update" mine while I'm changing the drive sprockets. I don't have them side by side to make a visual comparison; however, my recall is that the early style secondaries were revised for model year 1968; ie. there likely isn't any/much difference between my 68 and the 71. Can anyone confirm?

Hi Silverbullet
You are right, the 68 was the first year that got the ramped helix, and they stuck with that design for many many years. The only update you'll get is better internals.
The 68 will have a single roller chain with the big aluminium eccentric tensioning outfit. It's up to the operator to make sure the chain is tensioned properly
The 71 case is still steel, but has the two flippers inside to automatically tension the dual roller chain. The brake is a drum style instead of the lever style... neither were very good but the drum is marginally better.
Up to you if you feel like "updating". Might make initial engagement a little smoother IF the chain is slack in the old style case. IMO grab it and hang onto it incase you have an issue with the old one.

Thanks for good info. I'll grab it. Price is right (I'm saving it from a trip to a dumpster, lol) The 68 brake is no marvel of engineering but I may keep it all original for those guys with discerning eyes (now that I know the difference myself...)
