This question inspired by post on the elan thread: Decent, affordable used 1.97 pitch tracks are becoming increasingly rare but there seems to be numerous 2.52 pitch tracks out there. Notwithstanding dealing with the difference in length (eg. original 114 vs 120 or 121); has anyone found a straightforward combination of parts that would bolt up into a pre 1974 15" tunnel, ie, elan, Oly or tnt to enable use of a 2.52 track? Or is some custom machining/modification of a drive shaft inevitable?

Just a week back or so on one of the Elan boards of facebook some one was asking about that- there was a person that had taken some UMHW material (sort of like Delrin/plastic) and machined their own drivers to bolt to the stock shaft flanges that were a 2.52 pitch. But nobody recalled their name or how to get in touch with them.
I have buried behind the shed 1500 miles from me a '73 Oly shell I bought for parts, has a track but no rear axle etc. I looked it over last summer while moving things, and thought it looked different- then I saw POLARIS in the track. And the drives are different. I bet it's a common 121 Polaris rubber track somebody started doing a conversion on.

Found this thread about the same topic: www.dootalk.com/forums/topic/1537329-anyone-convert-form-197-to-252-pitch-track/At the end there is reference to using 2.52 drivers on a 80-84 Citation axle. I believe the citation gear splines will match the 70's chain sprockets but the axle will likely need to be shortened with a new bearing end turned onto it to match the specific width of the early 70's tunnel and chain case set up. (The 80-84 citation tunnels are a bit wider than the early 70's units to my recall). I am not a machinist so if I were to explore this further I'd end up paying someone to shorten/machine an axle which in turn would make using a cheaper/used 2.52 track a little less cost effective.

Interesting topic Silverbullet. I would definitely like to know what's possible. I hung on to an 80 motoski mirage axle years ago just for that reason. Several years ago I saw a modified bullet for sale on kijiji that had a Polaris skid with a 121 track, and had a 503 mill in it. The rear of the tunnel was trimmed and the running board tapered off to the rear bumper, similar to lots of newer sleds. Looked good. Found the pics I saved of it! photos.app.goo.gl/kPRqah1ucstXV7Z2A

I have a 116" 2.52 track in my wife's 72 single racer. I think I used a driveshaft from a 9500 and swapped out the drivers. I did use a chaincase spacer from a twin cylinder sled if that helps. Modified an RV slide suspension for it.

Haven't raced in about 4 years. Started racing vintage in 2000-2001. Ran grass in the summer, ovals and some drags in the winter. 6 sleds summer, 6 different sleds in the winter. Me, my wife, and my mother-in-law. We did well. Too much work for one guy. Probably had the best handling Ski-Doo single in the world. That's not BS. Deb has 2 ER oval flags, and should have 2 more. One was a plugged lube valve. The other was a red flag in turn 4 on the last lap with a big lead. On the restart, plug cap failure. She held it on the plug, and passed 5 sleds in one lap driving with one hand. She can drive...

I'm really bad with posting pictures. Need to get them off the phone and on to the laptop. Then maybe I can figure out how to post them on here.
