Has anybody have experience with the volt regulator. It blew out all the lights on this 440 hornet so I looked at the regulator and someone looks like put a new one in but they cut the wires and put connectors in probably because they didn't know how to get the old pin connectors out. I have never had to deal with a regulator the connections look good so I put new bulbs in and they worked good all day next day after about a hour lights blown. Is there any specs that you can test them its on the 2000 mxz 440.

Not an expert, but sure sounds like the voltage regulator is bad, time to replace it.

I'm guessing towards that but I don't know if they will sometimes work and sometimes not never had to mess with one.

Wish I had a answer for you Olympic, but I doo not. About all I know of testing a regulator is with engine running at good speed, then check volts. If the regulator is working intermittent then this test is a crap shoot. If it appears your regulator has been changed and someone had to cut wires, it sounds like it might be a aftermarket unit ?? If so my money is really on it being NG. That regulator is still available from Ski Doo for about $60.00 Canadian ( I bought one a week ago for buddy ). Bones

I think erratic voltages (or way too high) is a pretty good symptom of a bad regulator. Try having everything connected as its "supposed" to, get your meter setup for DC voltage, and then measure the DC voltage of the system, when then engine is running. Jack the backend up so you can rev it up or just take the belt off. Put the black wire of the meter on a good ground (using vise grips on the engine somewhere is easier). Then identify a 12 volt line that is always live when running - maybe the + line coming out of the rectifier (or even a headlight wire if you can't find one). Then start it up and see what you get. Rev it up and it should be like any other engine and produce in the range of 14v or so. It its way out to lunch then there's no doubt that its the regulator.
I too think its bad, but make sure the grounds / connections are in good shape too. There's a chance the last guy didn't use the right one and it couldn't handle the mag coil output. Might want to put better connectors on it too. Nothing worse than twisted wires and taped up. Its a guarantee for failure later on. If you cant use proper connectors and have to join wires together - always solder them together and protect with heat shrink or electrical tape. Solder gives not just a great mechanical connection its also a great electrical connection. I digress...

Olyman the volts that are coming out of the coil is ac? I tested it today hooking up red lead on the multimeter to the wire coming out of the coil and black lead to the ground at idle around 15 vac and 1/4 throttle 55vac. Then when I hook up the coil wire to the regulator and test the black wire coming out of the regulator I get nothing. I'm going to put a new regulator in its $55 will try that.

Well that's good that you are reading ac from the mag like that. Means the problem isn't deeper inside. I'm willing to say you will be good with the new one. Do you have a wiring diagram for the sled?

Thanks olyman for the info I'm going to put in a new regulator unfortunately the two dooo dealers don't have one so on order.
