My neighbour made me an offer I couldn't refuse, so I am now the proud owner of a 1969 Alpine and an 1980 Alpine. They both have 640's in them. I really don't need another project, but I just couldn't pass them up.

I got to dig a little deeper into the 1980. Pulled the gas tank and emptied it out. Cleaned up the outside of the tank a bit. I found a fist size hole in the belly pan that will need some patching. The bogies are all original and in pretty good shape. I added some fresh gas and it fired right up. It idled on its own for 5 minutes. When I tried to give it some gas it stopped running and would not start again. It seemed to have weak/no spark on the Mag side.

Holey Moley Dando! Not one tank but two! Welcome to the brigade! Theres nothing like them, thats for sure. Good job getting the 80 running - sounds like its a going to be a great runner. What kind of transmission do they have? Does the 69 have reverse too? Looking forward to seeing your progress on these big old girls

Storage has become an issue for me, so I decided to pass the 1980 over to a friend who I know will make it as good as new. I am keeping the 1969 for myself though. It kinda fits with all the other machines I have. The 1969 does not have reverse, although I have read that a 1970 gearbox will fit. I can't wait to dive into it.

I have started to clean up the 1969 Alpine. I took out the crusty old battery from under the seat. I took off the fuel tank and fished an old fuel pick up out of the bottom. I pulled as much crud as I could out of the tank. I think I might try and rig up some kind of small vacuum hose to get the rest. I also got the bumper off. I snapped two bolts, and had to cut off two others. I have a question about the rubber trim that goes around the nose. Is it riveted on? It looks like the rivets go through it. If that is the case I will leave it alone.

I am trying to put a gaerbox with reverse on my 69. I found one, but it has a triple chain, from a 1972. Do you think I could use the double chain and double lower sprocket with that geaarbox? I have been looking for awhile, and this is the first geaarbox I've found.

Ya finding alpine parts are a pain it seems. I'm still looking for a good secondary that I dont have to fix... But yes you can use the triple chain if you have the top and bottom sprockets. Thats what my last 69 alpine had in it. I think the main mods on this were the brake and caliper it had on it, extra steering ball tube thing extension, exhaust manifold (to suit a 440), and the shifter was also a little goofy looking where it mounted and the shaft ran through the tach hole. Not sure what year all the parts were scavenged from, but likely early 70's like what you found. Everything else seemed to fit (from what I can remember).

If the sprockets you have actually fit along with the chain being the right length theres no reason why you couldn't use them. I'm guessing that a triple chain was meant for a 640...

Thats good news. Its not crazy expensive so its worth a shot....I am getting the chain and lower sprocket as well. I looked at mine last night....The socket where the lower sprocket sits seemed tight with the double sprocket in it...thats why I questioned it ..thanks again for the advice.

So I got my new gearbox. The case looks like its seen better days! Its got a major repair on the lid and a smaller one on the lower part of the case. It looks like all the guts are there, so that's good. I may have to grind some of the the "repair" off of the inside of the lid. I think it is stopping the fork from moving freely. I have new bearings and seals coming soon. I did a little measuring, and I think I am going to have to move the engine sideways for the primary clutch to line up with the secondary. I see there are extra holes in the engine mounting bracket, probably for that reason. I also heard the 640 run today for the first time. I got the points and condensers changed, timed the engine and put a carb kit in the HD20.
