I had planned to take the Elan with the 320 single in it out for a fishing trip tomorrow. I purchased a used Comet clutch this summer and decided to put it on before leaving. I got the clutch changed and went for a quick trip up my street....all good. I was not able to install the clutch cover, but I chalked it up to the different style clutches. I wasn't overly impressed by the Comet, but it was at least as good as the clutch I had taken off.
After the ride, I looked at the belt, it looked visibly offline, and had some slight fraying. There were quite a few shims behind the old clutch, and I left them when I installed the Comet, so I decided to remove the shims. I took off about 8 shims, and left 2 on just for good measure.
There is also alot of slobber around the exhaust exit, so I decided to check out the gasket, because I had another on hand. A 1/2" section of the gasket was missing on the bottom. I put on the new gasket, and reinstalled the exhaust.
When I tried to start it, the recoil rope would not retract!!!! So I tinkered enough with the rope to try again. The engine fired a little, and then made a fairly loud wheezing sound, and died when I gave it a little throttle. I got it to fire a few more times, all with that wheezing sound and recoil trouble.
I haven't been able to get back to it, but I am thinking maybe my exhaust is plugged??? and the recoil and clutch are unrelated?

False alarm.....the exhaust was plugged!!!
The minute I loosened the muffler from the engine, the recoil recoiled!!! So I took the muffler off and stuck a torch in the outlet until it started smoking from the inlet. Re-installed, and all better....went for a short ride and all good

We all like false alarms!! Glad you got it figured out.
Yesterday I spend a bunch of time in the garage with mixed results. I'll post them where they belong in my 67 Oly and 70 TNT threads. Lets just say it was bittersweet. LOL

Nice detective work! What do yoy figure it was plugged with? Just critter leftovers or?
And the comet clutch - do you recall what color of spring and the puck configuration was? There's apparently a variety of styles (weights) and combos to get you where you want. I can ask my contact at Recreation Supply what the right combo is for a 320 (335 is likely the same) and get back to you.

I think I plugged it last year. I read the 69 manual and it said something crazy like the original mix ratio was 16:1, so i decided 20:1 couldn't hurt. I ruined a few spark plugs before I finally changed to 40:1. Big difference!!! I suspect during that time, the muffler got full of carbon.
All I did was stick a lawn and garden torch in the outlet until it got red and smoked out the inlet. I didn't smell cooked mouse, but I guess it could have been a nest!
The Comet has a pink spring and 6 pucks. The cover is smooth, not ribbed. I think it is the proper one, and yes, if you can get some info, I'll take it....
It wasn't bad, It just didn't seem much different than what I was using. It was a very brief ride though, i'll give it a better test this weekend....

Right on, makes good sense. Oh ya - big difference with the oils and fuel of today vs back then.
Do you know anything else about the pucks? I know there are different weighted ones, but it's hard to tell by looking at. But some have holes in them, some have metal inserts, some are just plain plastic etc.
Also if it felt the same then it's likely right. The big difference is smooth engagement and quiet operation. And you don't have to lube it.
