Culprit of the chain break found! Normally, I tip a sled on the recoil side to get the chain case jockeyed over the splines- in this case I did it horizontal. In my wiggling to align things, the inner shim had come off and fallen in the case.
It goes shim-sprocket-shim-cotter pin. In this case the shim lying in the case got between the gear and chain, bam-o!!
Goose..I'll be needin' a shim or two, and another used set of link plates to cut up to section for the short track problem...

Nice work on determining the culprit Eric. I'm sure you'll have the ole girl back up and going before you know it.
On a side note whose Honda 4 Wheeler is that? Me likes! I have a 2000 Honda Foreman 450. I picked it up a couple years ago and since then I don't know how in the world I ever lived without one. It's Probably the most useful tool I have on my property.

Doo640- that's Gooses wheeler, I was riding the Elan standing on the tunnel as he pulled me at a spirited pace up to the barn. I think it's a Rancher or Foreman or such.
I'm old school, rockin' an '86 ATC 125M..who needs suspension!

Well and update! Fifteen bucks on Amazon got me enough #40 chain to re do five sleds- also bought a chain breaker tool.
Got the chain/shim issue worked out. Then on to the shrunk track issue- I was going to cut and stretch the link plates and buy some used ones from Goose as long as I needed shims anyway. I did not know Oly plates are 8" long and Elan plates are 6 3/4". A set of stock Oly plates took care of the problem, BUT I also had to swap hard plastic cogs on back, as the rubber kept jumping the holes. The front drives did not.
NOW with the four wheel, dual spring Oly bogie sets, the back was so stiff the rear idlers did not touch the ground. I drilled and moved the front bogies UP to make it work better. ONce on snow I may have to put them down. Time will tell.
Since this pic I have swapped in the hard plastic, run it a bit, I now have about 1/2" of adjuster screw through the bolt, track is properly tensioned.

I have a nice, Florida license plate for a belt guard. A simple toggle for ignition on/off. When my LED light gets here, it will be mounted to the middle of the handlebars. The hood will lift off. "Speed bungees" will hold the Polaris indy seat on.
I'm done patching the cracked '72 hood it will wear with the usual tin backing and pop rivets, just didn't get a pic. The purpose of this build was to ride on the 40 some acres of hilly woods and swamp bottom property at my familys place in Minnesota- I will fill out the vintage registration on it for the state but it's doubtful it will see much trail time, I have other machines for that. This one is made for going ten mph in the swamp!

That Polaris seat looks like it was made for that sled. I'd love to take a rip on that. The whole thing has come along great. I never would have considered the link plate option you went with. To me that's brilliant, but to some that may be common knowledge. I probably need to do the same treatment on my 67 Oly. Doo you think there are other link plates from other model Doos that would work?

Got 'er mostly done! Sorry for the crappy phone pix.
Aaaand here she is, tucked in the trailer to go from Georgia to central Minnesota. Yep, when I was a kid I just made fun of folks with roof carriers, now we have gone beyond that to a 6x12 enclosed trailer! A honda ATC, a mini four wheeler, four kayaks, tools, fishing gear, and a few cases of Spotted Cow beer (went through Wisconsin) fill 'er up. Towing this box knocks the fuel mileage from 21-22 down to 12-13.
Took 'er for a rip in the tall grass along the property hoodless- wish I'd had the gopro on! Now she's tucked away in the shed with the rest of my stuff-

The thing I did not get too was cutting the bars just past the support and adding about 4" to the stem, so I can ride standing up more comfortably without leaning over.
I still have to wire in a switch for the headlights.

Pretty cool job there Eric. Should be a great addition to the vintage gang there. Love the old Ford - is it an 8N?

Olyman- Yep! It's a '49. Dad bought it on a whim, it looks like it was "restored" with a paint job and re wiring...lots of minimal bodywork on fenders and hood. Does run pretty good though.
I need to rig up a boom pole, then it will be better for moving the parts stock around!
