I'm sure many members here are familiar with the numerous rust products that claim miracles by causing rust to disappear. The only thing personally for me that disappears is the cash used to purchase the product.
The ingredient that dissolves rust in many of the products is oxalic acid which is found in wood bleach.
However, many times the concentration is limited in strength. By purchasing oxalic acid in the powdered crystalline form, a more concentrated solution may be mixed that effortlessly dissolves rust within a short period of time. It has worked quite satisfactorily on rusted chrome parts. It will not remove the pitted chrome surface, but will remove the oxidized metal within the visible area of concern.
I thought I’d try it on metal that was not chromed, yet significantly rusted. The gas gauge of a 1970 Nordic was selected for the experiment.
I found a large enough container for the gas gauge, and then allowed the part to soak for two or more days while intermittently stirring the solution. Remember to use precaution when using oxalic acid and follow directions printed on the container. It has effortlessly removed rust to a better extent at a more cost efficient price.
Cleaned up the fuel tank fitting also:
Is it a miracle? No….but way easier on the pocket book and performance than some of the other products available.
Usually available at Ace Hardware.
It really "shines" when removing rust from chrome. As previously stated, will not erase the pitted surface, but will remove the rust in the crevices that no other products does so well and cheaply.

That looks like something I'm going to have to try on my 70 TNT. My tank is currently filled to the rim with Acetone, and has been for months. When I got the sled I noticed there was some old gas sludge in the tank. I'm not too sure on the extent of the rust but will try this de-rust technique regardless.
What concentration did you formulate? Is too strong a bad thing or just a waste of chemical? I'm actually a chemist by education, but never worked with this chemical.
Thanks

Here's a good video showing mixing methods and results within 24 hours with no scrubbing. I believe many of those that use it for rust removal will be quite surprised.

I have 1 question about the surfaces that are cleaned. Do they need to be painted or will the surface "flash" with rust like it does when you use electrolysis? If used in a belly tank would it rust again easily? I usually use Red Kote after cleaning tanks so I was just wondering.

Toilet bowl cleaner works really well to clean small metal parts.
Stick part in cleaner for a couple minutes pull out rinse with water
wipe. Dip in vinegar to help prevent rust flash over.
This stuff is toxic has been known to cause birth defects in the mice that build nests in old doo mufflers.
Do your own research on the dangers of this and all products before you use them.
Really works well
