Yes ericr 73 seemed to be the last registration and neat thing is it still has the dealer decal on the hood where it came from which is couple towns over. Made some progress on the 320 today Found this must be all that torque from the 320 Looks like it has a few dents

I have seen a shaft twisted like that before from a chain breaking at speed and suddenly locking the track up. Clean that chain case out good! Is this going to be a restoration or a resurrection? Here's my '69, it's a long winded blog but towards the bottom you'll see the work I did on it. jethrosgarage.blogspot.com/2015/02/

Not sure ericr on a restoration but make it a good runner. What I'm thinking is it will be a practice run before I do my 69 370 which I want that to be perfect. I pulled the engine few years which was locked up bad from sitting outside and the sparkplug was out of it so it was full of rust and so amazing that nothing was cracked. I had to bore out the cylinder .020 and put new bearings in it so the engine is good in fact I just took out the 335 in 72 olympic and put the 320 in and it runs perfect. I will post pictures on this build if I can remember to stop and take some I get working and forget about doing stuff like that. I remember seeing that post sometime must of been on the old message board but very nice work and it came out looking very nice. Last weekend we had a dice run in my area and it got me thinking how cool would it be to have an old bubble nose running the trails because all I saw were dirt bikes that they took the wheels off and put a track on and some skis nothing old school. When I took the plug off I noticed this no cotter pin and not sure if sprocket is in backwards because no hole on the sprocket.

Sounds like a definite worthy project for sure Olympic! I agree with the chain break causing the torqued bend on teeth. I had some that looked the same. Usually easiest to happen with the thin walled axles which yours certainly is. I don't think your bottom sprocket will have a cotter pin hole on either side, likely just floats on the axle - typical for the older years. But yours might have an elan axle in it? Not sure but you can see the cotter pin hole in it, and its not coming very far in to the sprocket. Should measure the length and compare to a known oly axle. Might be worth having a thicker walled oly axle with that high torque 320!

Looking for some advise on the hood. I will take more photos of the hood tomorrow has quite a few spider cracks and down by the fill hole is busted up some. I really wasn't planning on painting the hood but these really should be fixed.

It depends on what you want in the end. Digging into the breaks and cracks can turn into a real magilla. Where do you stop? I've always had trouble with that question once I got my nose into the work so just ended up going the full measure. Uhh, the hours! Fixing the worst of it and then touch up paint is certainly a viable option for a non-restro runner. Get it whole, get it mechanically sound, hit the gas. I'm changing my tune as I age, I'm getting lazier I've more than satisfied my appetite for showroom restros. No more of those in my future. (Well, maybe one more)

Like JoeO, I have come to be a resurrector. I've done a couple of perfect restorations but then was afraid to ride them! My first silverbullet was beautiful (if I say so myself) but I absent mindedly followed my brother through the canes one day in the hardwood bush and that perfect paint was perfect no more, lol. I was going to suggest you seek a better hood, they are still out there, but you can't recreate the "Wild Thing" customization. I'm more for targeting mechanical reliability then riding it. The old bubble noses are becoming of an age where no matter where I go, people flag me over to check out the old iron, whether its perfect or not. I think they are impressed just to see them out and being used. Can't wait to see your progress on this one!

silverbullet that crossed my mind of getting another hood but I said well it is not that bad but was like I know I need to fix the major cracks but was like do I go all the way and fix all them spider cracks. After I took the picture of the spider cracks I noticed and you can just see where they painted "WILD THING" and just to the left of the W you can see a black paint mark. So I was like I can't take them numbers and registration sticker off because they painted that before the numbers were on. I am going to just fix the major cracks and do touch up paint on it the tunnel is going to have some welding and repair on it so it won't be original but it is going to be mechanical fit to ride some trails.
I will definitely will show the progress of things.

My goodness joeolympique hopefully none them cracks came back a lot of time involved there. I'm going to fix the major cracks and leave the spider cracks alone.
Does anyone know what the gauge of the metal is on the tunnel maybe 12 or is it heavier.

My goodness joeolympique hopefully none them cracks came back a lot of time involved there. A lot of time, don't you know it. That is just a small sampling of what that cab had to offer. The entire surface was racked with spiders. I would probably have been better off sand blasting all of the original gel coat away and applying a new one. But I had/have no experience with that process so I just stayed with what I knew... grinded, dremeled, and sanded out all the damage. Countless hours, reams of sand paper and dremel tips, and too much pain in my arthritic hands to ever want to doo it again. The sled was sold last year. I had it for three years post restoration. Started it regularly to keep it fresh but never rode it. All of the repairs held during its time with me.
