Well, was able to get a small tool bag together for it today with essential tools and parts. Added some more gas and took it out for a spin. Plan on venturing out farther away in the late morning, after I add some more gas again. Put new fuel lines on Friday night, and fitted a manual hand primer pump to it. I think I’m going to like that primer addition, as long as it keeps working well. Nice to walk out for the first cold start of the morning, give it four pumps, (first couple pumps are purging air) and pull the rope one time. So here’s another video, if I didn’t bore you too badly with my other ones: vimeo.com/514865129ps... Olyman—you talked me in to it! Lol.. got the matching tach to the CHT gauge coming.

Nice! She seems to run quite nicely. LOL nice! The Westach will look good on there, and be functional too!

Went for a ride. Snowing today but wanted to get out there anyway. With white snow in the air/cloudy/all white fields, made it a little hard to find the trail signs. Had to turn back anyway, as it the exhaust pipe cracked off on the PTO side. I had a feeling about those pipes...rusted and sounded pretty thin. With that pipe completely cracked, I am wondering if that was why I was sensing a little loss of high end power. Curiously, I noticed the CHT temperature on that cylinder dropped about 30~40 deg F... I was guessing because the back pressure wasn’t there, so had better flow, but not better power. 22 Feb Edit: Well I took the plunge and got a new exhaust coming for it. Will be inspecting cylinders/pistons/cleaning ports as required. Hopefully nothing happened. I don’t know if its possible to go so lean, that there is flame but very little power, because that CHT I was seeing is weird. Cylinder should have gone hot if it was still trying to make power. Will let you know how the port/cylinder inspection turns out.

It's probably ok, but pistons are available if needed. Better it broke close to home than not!

Were you able to check the compression on each side? Power loss could be spark related too.

Hi guys.
New exhaust should be here today or tomorrow. Got old exhaust off, and the exhaust stubs screwed right out by hand. Port inspection revealed completely clean ports, and nothing but expected/normal wear on pistons/cylinders/visible ring area. Will do a compression test/spark plug(< 6 hrs old) inspection as well. I expect it to be fairly even, and in spec, based on the seat of the pants “feel” when pulling the rope slowly. Got to make up some new spark plug wires. Interestingly, the exhaust inlet pipes on the defunct muffler were dry, and light brown/tan in color...so I was say it was running pretty good. New tach should be in today as well.

Then the engine is likely just fine, and something inside the muffler likely broke and plugged that side. New muffler will be sweet sounding, work awesome, nice to look at and will last another 50 years!

New tachometer and muffler installed. Engine seems fine/runs great. Now, I don’t know if I’ll get any more real riding in again. Been in the high 30’s F for several days, snow has turned to that wet, heavy, large “sugar crystal” crap. Hopefully we’ll get at least one more decent fresh coating. The tachometer, unfortunately, does not seem to work properly without the headlight being on. Seems to hover between 1-2000rpms no matter what. When the light is on, it works pretty accurately. Maybe the AC sine wave from the coil is noisy/dirty, until a load is put on it?

Finally found the right-side louver..except it was in black. Used Rustoleum paint/primer gloss Marigold. Looked like a dead ringer when it was wet; today I can see the slight difference when close up. Close enough for me though. Was nice to get that hole closed up.

Can't tell the difference with that nice bright headlight. As long as you are ok with it that's all that matters.

Looks good to me! Nice job.
And no idea why the tach only works right with the light on. I'd expect the only way you will really know is watching the different power lines with a scope. Depending on how the tach works and what yoy are supplying for power will tell the whole story.
