Gang, Its cold and we have little snow. Thought I would spend some time on a 335 basket case for fun. Put a new coil on and a new wire. No spark. I can make it spark by applying 12v to the coil and disconnecting it. Cleaned up and adjusted the points. Checked all wires and they seem fine. I am at the point of buying an oscilliscope to check the magneto coil voltage open circuit and them connected to the points. Are there replacements for them? The coil I replaced is the external spark coil. Anyone ever rewind one for fun? Ps I am an engineer and dont like it when there is something I cant fix and this spark issue is really bugging me

is it an E-start engine? IE external coil like a twin engine?
Checking the wires is good but should be checked with a multimeter if you want proof (to me an oscilloscope seems a little overkill for this). Same with the coils and condensor. Every coil has a resistance than can be measured, and the condensor (nothing more than a capacitor) can also be tested with some meters for actual capacitance - can also be crudely tested with resistance. There could also be cold solder joints, or broken conductors from someone that make it not work right as well.
Since you saw a spark when manually applying the 12v it shows that the wire and plug is likely OK. Sounds like there is something not right with the connection to/from the condensor and/or the condensor itself.

I am about to run over my bombardier products with my timberjack product this winter. Not sure how I have lost spark on 2 machines at the same time. Maybe testing out my quantum pulse generator to be used for world domination was not a good idea. Both on singles. One is electric start, 250 single and the other is recoil start 335. Neither have spark at the moment. The 250 was in an elan and did a couple laps around the house no problem and now it is dead.
Could not get a waveform to display on my multimeter oscilloscope but maybe I should read its manual. I disconnected the generator coil from the condensor and points and wired it right out of the case for ease of testing. Did the same for the points. The coil stator generates about 3.6 volts which seems low. Resistance was within spec. SPX 812-2008 says it is for all rotax engines 1973 onwards. I may try it for fun before I try and rewind one of these.
Grrrrr

Good news....the spx 812-2008 magneto coil fits the rotax single fine. Uses an external coil. They also make an internal coil for the earlier singles but were out of stock. Will get some pics and a video uploaded this eve. Its super sparky now! Output is just under 7 volts open circuit. Thats 2x of what was in there. Yay. Should be riding this weekend all things being equal.

Right on Krusty! Good detective work. I've never searched to find the coil voltages before but thats great to know. Others will be happy too. Happy sledding

I am super excited to get out this weekend. I still have a 68'ish alpine with the boxter in it i am awaiting rear sprokets before I can get it out. Everything is on backorder this year. Was a little shocking holding the plug wire when the plug was bouncing off the engine. youtu.be/X6CAVZQa62g

Well I am not so sure it will be as expected. The points are a bit sticky on the post they attach to. Here in canada it is like mother russia with virtual breadlines for snowmobile parts. I cannot find points for the life of me. They are available in the us for 5 bucks but then add in 42 us shipping via usps. It has become crazy. So with that in mind, i will be cutting firewood and may haul my 200 atc out for some 3 wheel fun! At least I know what I will need for next winter

1970tnt yes shipping just got insane. You can imagine the weight of a set of points. Will try a few different places. I live near the NY border and usually just get my stuff shipped there, drive across and pick it up. But that dang border is closed.

I almost had to pay 52+ usd to ship a gas plunger, 10' of 1/8" gas line and a rubber mikuni intake flange. The cost didnt appear until after I got to the checkout... the danged parts added up to 45 or so... So I complained and they were able to reduce it down to about 20 usd. I think online company's software automatically guesses the price of shipping based on a few different things but take the time to call / contact them. They might be able to help out like they did for me.
