I'm going through a 70 335 Olympic. I'm wondering how much play the drive axle should or could have? I've replaced numerous drive axles on these sleds and maybe didn't notice on others but this one seems excessive from side to side. I have 1 spacer in front of the bearing and enough room for 2 spacers on the spline next to the cotter key. Even with the two spacers i get back and forth movement of the axle. I did my 70 399 last year and I know they're entirely different with the width of the chaincase, I only had enough room to get the cotter key and zero movement if i remember correctly.

I think you could put as many shims in there to make it stay in one place. Having the axle move around too much makes it possible to have the track rub against the side of the tunnel. Having one on either side of the sprocket is a good idea, but add more as you see fit. Wont hurt anything as long as everything still moves freely and is still lined up.
