I'm already planning ahead for some of next summer's sled projects and I would like to repaint the skis and leaf springs on my 77 TNT 340f/a. What is everyone using for the mid-late 70s black paint? For my 67 I used the John Deere medium gloss black which is considered to be a well-accepted match to the early Ski Doo black paint of that era. Did this shade and gloss carry over into the 70's? I never gave it much thought. Sorry, my OCD is showing a little, but it's those little things that matter to me when trying to spruce-up a sled. I want no regrets when I stand back and stare at the fruits of my labor. Thanks, think snow!!

I honestly don't think you can go wrong with the JD med. gloss black. It's tried and true. To my eye it has the perfect, mellow, satin luster. No obnoxious shine that highlights every pit and ping. I refreshed a 78 Oly with it a few years ago and was delighted with the way it looked. Good luck with that project.

Thanks Joe Oly. I agree 100%, that JD medium black is just a good looking paint. I've seen other's use Tremclad in certain applications and thought to myself that it looked pretty good too. Searching on line, I think I've learned that Tremclad is only available in Canada? Seems like it is the Canada version of Rust-Oleum. I will check to see what types of black are available.

The JD is really nice. I had a hard time finding it here when I looked - Even went to a John Deere dealer and they just looked at me with an open mouth.. I've had decent luck with tremclad medium gloss in the past, and also with satin black tractor paint from TSC. Not sure which brand owns who, but i'm thinking that Rustoleum is a huge company that has a lot of offerings. If you go with something you can shoot in a HVLP gun, that kind of paint is good if you thin it and add a hardener. If not, it will get hard over time ... a long time lol.

My John Deere Dealer is my Ski-Doo dealer. Last time I went, I bought some Med gloss black for a few touch ups to get me through the season. I had to walk past a bunch of $20000 machines with my can of $15 paint.......

Here's a trick that has worked for me. A couple of times I've been faced with a black that was too glossy (no JD on hand or readily available). I finished the job by spraying on a couple of coats of clear satin. Worked out quite well.

Paying attention to those little things can make a good job look fantastic.
